The ideal 2-kite pair to cover the full Brazilian season for your weight:

Reference calculation based on aerodynamics and average rider experience. Local gusts, chop and air density affect power on the bar. When in doubt between two sizes, rig the smaller one.

How the calculation works

Aerodynamic lift generated by a kite canopy scales with two primary variables: canopy area ($m^2$) and the square of wind speed ($v^2$). Doubling wind velocity quadruples the raw pulling force.

As a result, modest wind increases (e.g., from 18 to 24 knots) require noticeable drops in kite size to keep the load on your harness within manageable control.

Quick Reference Chart (Twintip)

Average recommended kite size for standard twintip riding (136–140 cm) in typical chop:

Wind (knots) Light (55–65 kg / 120–145 lbs) Medium (70–80 kg / 155–175 lbs) Heavy (85–100 kg / 185–220 lbs)
12 – 15 kts 10 – 11 m² 12 – 13.5 m² 14 – 17 m²
16 – 19 kts 8 – 9 m² 10 – 11 m² 12 m²
20 – 23 kts 7 m² 8 – 9 m² 10 – 11 m²
24 – 27 kts 6 m² 7 m² 8 – 9 m²
28 – 33 kts 5 m² 6 m² 7 m²

Building a 2-kite quiver for Brazil

You don't need a four-kite setup to travel. The key is maintaining a 2 to 3 square meter gap between your two kites:

  • Riders up to 68 kg (150 lbs): ideal pair is 7 m² + 9 m² (or 7 m² + 10 m²).
  • Riders between 70 and 82 kg (155–180 lbs): ideal pair is 8 m² + 11 m² (most versatile pair in Brazil) or 7 m² + 10 m² if spending most of your season in windy Ceará (Jeri, Preá, Taíba).
  • Riders over 85 kg (185 lbs+): ideal pair is 9 m² + 12 m² (or 10 m² + 13.5 m² for lighter wind areas).

Frequently asked questions

What kite size should a beginner buy first?

For an average rider weighing 70–80 kg (155–175 lbs) riding in Brazil (especially Ceará and the Northeast), a 9 m² or 10 m² kite is the single most versatile daily driver. Riders under 65 kg (145 lbs) typically pick a 7 m² or 8 m²; riders over 85 kg (185 lbs) lean toward 11 m² or 12 m².

What happens if you use a kite that is too big for the wind?

You get overpowered. The kite pulls relentlessly downwind and upward, making it hard to hold an edge and stay upwind. It dramatically increases the danger of accidental lofting on the beach. When in doubt between two sizes, always rig the smaller one.

Why do wave boards and hydrofoils use smaller kites?

Directional surfboards have significantly more buoyancy and surface area, allowing them to plane earlier (roughly 2 m² smaller kite needed). Hydrofoils fly above water with minimal drag, generating high apparent wind and requiring 3 to 5 m² less kite than a standard twintip.

What is the minimum wind speed to kitesurf?

On a standard twintip, comfortable riding begins around 13–14 knots for an average rider (75 kg / 165 lbs). With a hydrofoil or specialized light-wind directional board, riding is possible in 8–10 knots.
