The riding
Cumbuco runs on trade winds boosted by a thermal effect. It blows from the east/southeast, side-onshore, which means a problem pushes you back to the beach rather than out to sea. Mornings start light, the wind builds through late morning and peaks mid-afternoon — so you can have breakfast without setting an alarm.
Two very different sessions in one place. The ocean gives you small chop and warm water, fine for first lessons and for cruising. Seven kilometres away, Lagoa do Cauípe is fresh, shallow and completely flat — it is where freestyle riders train, and where you will want to be if you are learning tricks.
Getting there
This is the easiest destination in northeast Brazil to reach: about 35 km from Fortaleza International Airport (FOR), paved the whole way, 40 to 50 minutes by transfer or ride app. Fortaleza has direct flights from Lisbon and connections through São Paulo from most of Europe and North America. No 4x4 needed, here or in the village.

Worth knowing
The lagoon is glassy in the morning and crowded by late afternoon. Go early if flat water is why you came.
You can reach Cauípe by kite — a 20-minute downwinder from the beach in front of the village.
Most schools rent gear by the day, so a first trip does not require flying your own kit.
Frequently asked
Is Cumbuco good for beginners?
It is arguably the best place in Brazil to learn. Wind is steady and predictable, the water is warm, the sea is shallow near shore, the lagoon gives you flat water for first rides, and the density of schools keeps lesson prices competitive.
When is the wind season in Cumbuco?
August through December, with the strongest and steadiest wind from September to November. July usually already delivers, and January still has good days.
